Walden Novel Summary
Thoreau published Walden in 1854 after living alone in the small Hut beside Walden Pond for two years two months into two days. The book took him about a decade to write. Thoreau wasn’t really alone, he was within walking distance of Concord Massachusetts, his hometown. He regularly went back to town like they’d have dinner along with his family. He regularly received guests at his own cabin which he all describes in detail in Walden PDF.
The point in his living in his hut by the pond was not to live completely isolated in nature. But the point was to run a social experiment to go on a spiritual quest and to provide the philosophical inspection of the meaning of life. To put it in Thoreau’s own words, he states “I went to woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only essential facts of the life & to see if I couldn’t learn what it had to teach, & not, when I came to die to discover that I had not lived.”
Walden consists of 18 pretty long chapters that are part memoir part spiritual quest. A lot of it is philosophical discourse and sometimes it can just be flat-out boring. Since he describes things like how he grows beans, how he watches ants a lot and how he takes a couple of bands. Even has a whole chapter dedicated to sounds. But there’s a deep sincerity in each chapter like when it comes to those sounds, he says that we make our minds and our worlds noisier than they need to be. Then leaves all of us with little opportunity to enjoy the sounds that the world is already making.
He talks about solitude and he acknowledges that we can feel lonely even when in the center of companions. Overall, Thoreau takes time at Walden to look skeptically at the mode we all live life. To wonder of all those busy things, we do are really necessary. He encourages the readers to make simpler their lives. To rid themselves of the excess activities and the luxuries that get in the way of deep fundamental appreciation and understanding for what life really is.
He tells us in his own words that “Most luxuries, & many of so-called comforts of the life, are not only indispensable but the positive hindrances to the elevation of the mankind.” So, after you read the portion of Walton that we read here, I want you to think about something, what is currently a part of your life, a luxury so, to speak. That you know is getting in the way of inspiring your life experience. Pick one thing that you feel might actually be holding you back rather than lifting you up. And then get that thing out of the life at least for a week. These are the things that we actually discuss today.
